Health in the Built Environment

Large scale construction projects including rail lines, housing and commercial developments have significant health implications for the communities in which they are built.  FRESC believes that those most impacted by these developments should have a voice in the processes that shape the developments, including requiring that developments include sidewalks, improved transit access or other health-related needs identified by community members.

Our work engaging residents in the La Alma neighborhood helped to institutionalize the use of the Healthy Development Measurement Tool (HDMT) by the Denver Housing Authority (DHA).  FRESC is diligently working with community leaders to advocate for the use of tools like the HDMT and Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) to improve health outcomes through responsible redevelopment.
