Immigrant Civic Engagement
FRESC also supports the civic participation of immigrants who live
and/or work in our community. FRESC works in coalition with other
organizations to provide information and referral to immigrants seeking
English as a Second Language and/or citizenship.
Ya Es Hora, Ciudadania
(It is time, citizenship) kicked off in Denver and dozens of other
cities in June 2007 in a national coordinated campaign for immigrants
who have ambitions to naturalize and apply for citizenship before new,
higher fees went into effect July 30 (from $400 to $675). The National
Council of La Raza, Univision, the National Association of Latino
Eelected & Appointed Officials, and Service Employees International
Union created the “Ya Es Hora” campaign to move people to become
civically active and contribute as citizens. As a part of this
nationwide effort, FRESC joined ten other local organizations to help
500 people fill out citizenship applications in time to meet the
deadline. |
